Are you Arty and Crafty?

Could you help an unpaid carer to learn a new skill or hobby?

We are looking for volunteers with an interest in arts and crafts who could support an unpaid carer to learn a new skill or hobby and achieve positive changes in their lives.

The carer will have identified a goal they wish to achieve and you will be matched to meet for an hour a week over a period of up to 10 weeks to support them in learning these skills. This will be 1:1 in person, in the carer's home or in the community, or remotely via zoom.

Goals could be anything from supporting them to take up painting or drawing or develop their photography skills – we also cover other interests and skills. You can choose what skills you would like to offer.

Enabling a carer to learn a new skill is very rewarding and will allow you to gain experience and develop your own skills.

You will receive out of pocket expenses, training and regular group supervision.


  • You will be a patient and enthusiastic individual with a willingness to support and enable others to work towards a goal.
  • You will need to have some art and craft skills.
  • You should be reliable, friendly, open minded and be able to set, maintain and work within personal and professional boundaries.

Practical Considerations

Regional Area - Brighton & Hove,  Meetings are usually in person with a carer in their own home or out and about in the community. Over the last year or so we have also introduced remote meetings via zoom or over the phone.

All meetings are risk assessed and all volunteers are required to conduct a DBS check.

When do I need to be available?

Details We will require you to attend a daytime or evening training session, either in person or via zoom. Matches are considered partly on the availability of both parties, we just ask that you commit to the hour a week for the full 10 weeks of each match

    The Carers Centre has disabled access, and each match will be made based on ability, needs and personality of the carer and volunteer including accessibility to the venue.

    We will refund pre-agreed travel and out of pocket expenses
  • Health and Safety
    The Carers Centre has CHAS health and Safety accreditation and risk assessments are carried out on each match.
  • Induction
    Full induction training, including carer awareness and full details of the volunteer role.
  • Insurance Cover for Volunteers
    The Carers Centre has public liability, emoloyers liability and professional indemnity insurance that covers staff/volunteer activities.

    We have up to date safe guarding policies for both children and vulnerable adults

    Must be 18+, we actively encourage applications from those from ethnic minority backgrounds and/or the LGBTQ+ community, as well as actively encourage applications from current and former unpaid carers.
  • Support on Offer
    Volunteer Coordinator available during office hours as well as regular in-person and remote volunteer supervision meetings.
  • This role is adaptable for different abilities
    We are open to applications from anyone who brings relevant skills and experience. Each match is made based on the needs of the carer, the suitability of the volunteer, taking into consideration access needs of both parties.
  • Training
    You will receive induction and ongoing training in boundaries, safeguarding, carer awareness etc before starting the role. With opportunities to access further training in the local area.
