Small Acts of Friendship, based in the elderly care wards at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, is a project to help elderly patients retain dignity, social activity, mobility and wellbeing whilst in hospital.

We are holding an Open Morning on Friday 11th October 2019 for people to come and find out about what volunteering with Small Acts of Friendship is like.

The volunteering role is to support a small group of patients taking part in activities such as reminiscence, art, hairdressing and poetry. You will be part of a supportive team of volunteers managed by the Small Acts of Friendship Coordinator, Paola O’Sullivan.

Volunteers are not asked to provide personal care for patients but do need to be able to focus on the needs of the patient as you engage with them, providing company and listening with empathy as they share their experiences.

Our volunteer team have a positive effect on patient wellbeing and find the experience personally fulfilling. Small Acts of Friendship is an innovative project which has been running almost two years and was commended in the recent CQC inspection of the hospital.
