Community Farm Community Shepherd
Sustainable Sussex is creating Sompting Community Farm and Nature Trail and is looking for either inexperienced or experienced people to become Community Shepherds (and for other roles) to help manage a small flock of Portland and Romney sheep.
The sheep are primarily to support sustainable rotational strip-grazing with occasional animals to provide meat for volunteer, beneficiary and public food and cooking events for those who eat meat. The sheep have a longer life than typically demanded, so produce healthier and more flavoursome and more sustainable meat.
The roles include:
Lookering, which may be suitable for those less physically capable, to make sure that sheep are in their strips and not escaped, or not lame, fly-struck or injured.
We are also looking for Community Shepherds who want to be more hands-on, helping to set up electric fencing for strip grazing, moving the sheep or learning to turn the sheep to check hooves, udders.
Lookering: A very peaceful role suitable for most ages and abilities. Being patient and observant is useful but can be taught. Good vision is useful too and maybe a good sense of smell for detecting fly-strike - but not essential. No experience needed.
Hands-on strip grazing mover: A bit more physical and active, our hands-on Community Shepherds will need to be physically fit in order to help move electric fencing and to move sheep across the farm site.
Hand-on animal care: Again, this role requires handling animals to perform routine checks and minor treatments and vaccinations, so these roles demand a physically fit person with a stronger stomach for dealing with fly-struck sheep on occasion.
- Opportunity to help create Sompting Community Farm and Nature Trail.
- Be part of a growing movement, learning to create sustainable systems and processes.
- Engage in a process from field to fork, or field to craft bench, with wool being processed, dyed and crafted into felts and other materials.
Based in a countryside location near bus routes and with a car park our opportunities are reasonably accessible, however these opportunities are year-round, on rough ground and all-weather.
Hours and days are flexible but it is essential that you are reliable within the Community Shepherd rota as these are responsible roles with animals being dependent on you for their welfare.
