Fabrica Archive Volunteer
Would you like to play an important role in preserving, sharing and exploring Brighton and Hove’s unique visual arts heritage? Fabrica, Brighton’s centre for contemporary art, has been providing a space for artistic support and public engagement in the city since 1996. We are seeking volunteers for our current archive project ‘Beyond the Temporary, preserving 25 years of site specific art’. Over its 25 years, Fabrica has collected thousands of documents relating to its exhibition programme; containing proposals, sketches, correspondence between curators and artists, photographic and film documentation, printed marketing materials and more. Documents are currently kept in 56 clear plastic, 60 L storage boxes on the Church’s balcony, far from public view and access. This project therefore intends on making Fabrica’s archive, and ultimately the art history of the city, an accessible resource that can be used by the wider community. This will open up Fabrica’s impressive past, revisiting exciting exhibition’s you may have even been a part of! They would love your help to ensure that Fabrica’s heritage is looked after and open to all.
What can you expect as a volunteer? You will learn about Brighton’s arts heritage and be guided/trained, as appropriate, in:
• Archive research
• Cataloguing, transcribing and indexing historical material
• Identification and display of historic material
No experience is necessary, as training / guidance will be given
This is a great and rare opportunity to delve deep into an extensive visual arts archive, handling materials which have never fully been explored. You will gain a ‘behind-the-scenes’ understanding of how exhibitions take form, while simultaneously learning new and invaluable skills such as heritage archiving, visual preservation and website development.
