Our Housing Options service works with customers to prevent homelessness and where this is not possible, to look at alternative forms of accommodation. The involvement and presence of volunteers in the Customer Service Centre is a key part of ensuring the Customer Service Centre offers a welcoming, calm and enjoyable experience for all customers.
This role is being designed to offer a personalised service for customers who are visiting the Customer Service Centre to make housing applications to Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC). It provides the opportunity to help people who are making homeless applications and who might like some extra help with this. Homelessness Prevention Volunteers will be given information and training to enable them to guide customers through the housing application process. The role is on an as-needed basis.
Training will support volunteers to provide support in certain key areas e.g. making a housing application, obtaining relevant documents, signposting to customers’ accommodation and contacting our customers by phone to make sure they have arrived and settled into their accommodation and to provide some follow up information if needed.
You will be working closely with BHCC colleagues e.g. Housing Support Service, Housing Needs Team, Housing Options Team, and Emergency Placement Team.

This role may suit people who are passionate about supporting customers who may be vulnerable and/or in housing crisis.
It may also suit people with lived experience of homelessness.

Practical Considerations

The Housing Options service can be a very busy and pressured environment. We do all we can to follow the law and provide a good service, but we strive to make ongoing improvements. It is important to note that this is not an advocacy role. On the contrary, we are seeking for you to help customers to feel welcomed and safe, when they may be feeling scared and distressed. Sometimes the homeless application process can feel overwhelming and we must respond to this by providing a more friendly place for people to discuss their housing problems. There are other groups in the City who campaign and provide advocacy for clients, including legal help under Legal Aid and this role must help residents make applications and not challenge the decisions, which we must make within the context of our legal duties.

The role will be based at our Customer Service Centre at Bartholomew House, Bartholomew Square in central Brighton and is easily accessible by train, bus, car or on foot.

When do I need to be available?

Details Full days between 900am and 500pm or half days between 900am and 100pm or 100pm and 500pm. Volunteers are not needed on Wednesday mornings.
