The Hove Learning Federation is the joint governing board of West Hove Infant School and Hove Junior School; this is an exciting time to join our board as our new federation embarks on a shared primary learning journey for our children.

Being a governor is a hugely rewarding role, where you can make a real difference to young people, give something back to your community and use and develop your skills.

We are proud that our schools are culturally rich and diverse places of learning, and we are keen to encourage people from diverse ethnic backgrounds to join us on the governing board. We believe that by having a greater range of perspectives and lived experience involved, the board will make better decisions in the interest of all pupils.

The Local Authority offers training for Governors, and we provide a programme of induction and mentoring, so previous governance experience is not a requirement.

Skills

We would especially like to hear from you if you have:

  • An open and enquiring mind and the ability to look at issues objectively.
  • The ability to work well with others.
  • A willingness to listen, ask questions, join in debate and make informed judgements.
  • A willingness to dedicate your time to attend meetings and visit the schools during the daytime occasionally.

We are especially keen to recruit someone who would be interested in moving into the position of chair or co-chair and we are also looking to strengthen our finance, safeguarding and health and safety skills on the board.

Benefits

  • An opportunity to use and develop your professional skills in a community volunteer position.
  • To gain new experience and skills in an educational setting.
  • Working with a group of passionate individuals from a range of professional backgrounds.

Practical Considerations

Most of our current governors work full-time, and with a little flexibility from their workplace they do manage to fit in their role around their other commitments. This role would also suit retirees and people working part-time who have more availability during the daytime.

The full governing board meets twice a term in the evening, with separate, smaller committees who meet 3-6 times a year. Meetings take place early morning or early evening. Currently, all meetings are held remotely, although we anticipate meeting face to face again in the future, when the timing is right.
