We seek a candidate who has the time and energy to commit to Safe in Sussex and the confidence and skills to act in a governance role and bring their human resource expertise. The Trustee Board is currently focused on assessing the development needs of the organisation’s employees and therefore experience of implementing appraisal systems, performance review processes and development plans would be an advantage.

We aim to operate a supportive environment where fellow Trustees and members of staff are encouraged to develop their skills to their fullest extent and this role will play an important part in achieving that aim. An understanding of the charity and voluntary sector will be an advantage and knowledge of the governance of charities is essential. We are also looking for someone who has understanding of, and empathy with the aims and objectives of Safe in Sussex.

  • Ensuring highest standards of governance in policies and practice related to employee relations, recruitment, retention, reward and recognition as well as staff and trustee training and development.
  • Reviewing and recommending current and future strategic resourcing where appropriate.
  • Assessing risks and measuring the impact of HR interventions in the light of changing legal requirements and best practice.
  • Ensuring long-term strategic oversight of the organisation’s personnel and staffing requirements in relation to the overarching goals of the charity.
  • Ensuring that HR activities and interventions are linked to the organisation’s charitable objectives and complement the organisation culture.
  • Ensuring the trustee board monitors and reviews the performance of the organisation’s Chief Executive, rewards performance accordingly and identifies appropriate development opportunities.

This role plays an important part in the robust governance of the charity by working with and supporting the Chair, the Board and the Senior Management Team to ensure the success of the organisation. As part of a small governance team, your specialist skills will be valued and respected and will be utilised to enhance the effectiveness of the Board.

Practical Considerations

Currently the board of Trustees meet 6 weekly in both online and face to face meetings which are held early evening at the charity offices located in Ferring, West Sussex.  There are good public transport links and free parking available.
