Library Connect Volunteers help members of the public aged 18+ to gain the skills and confidence in using the internet to become digitally literate within the city’s many libraries.

Not everyone has internet access at home or experience with computers, so volunteering for the Library Service means you’ll be helping people learn a range of skills using the library computers, or their tablet or smartphone.

Library Connect sessions and the volunteers that help run it are an essential part of the community, contributing to excellent customer service and helping people become digitally literate and enjoying the benefits of digital citizenship.

Main tasks:

To work with members of the public, both one to one and in groups to show them the possibilities of using the internet on a PC, tablet or smartphone.

To help answer customer enquiries and access information relating to a variety of services including council services.

To maintain a courteous and helpful attitude to learning and support.

To maintain the standards of the council’s Equalities policy.

To comply with health & safety legislation.

Skills

Good communication and people skills

Competent with ICT equipment using the internet on PC, tablet and smartphone

Previous experience of customer service or training is desirable

Knowledge of community languages would be welcome

Benefits

This role would suit somebody that wants to give their time to help people in a customer service environment. Community libraries are busy, vibrant and attract people from all parts of the community, so you will be working with a range of people from a variety of different backgrounds thus gaining valuable experience and enhancing your customer service skills. You will also gain from knowing that you have helped someone to enhance their skills and experience and perhaps made their lives easier and better through enabling them to access the internet safely.

Practical Considerations

Before you start:

You will receive guidance on being a volunteer which will include general advice on health and safety, what to do if you are late or sick, claiming expenses and what support will be available in the future.

When you start:

You will receive an induction and orientation session at the library you will be volunteering at and staff within the library will provide on-going support. Further training may be identified as you and the role develop to ensure you are supported to learn new skills and enhance your volunteering experience.

All volunteer roles within the library service support the existing work of paid staff and do not replace the work of paid staff. Support will be given to ensure that boundaries are maintained by staff and to ensure there is no replacement or substitution of staff by volunteers. Both the volunteer and B&H City Council Libraries have the right to end the volunteer placement at any time.
