Market Garden Development Support
Sustainable Sussex is developing Sompting Community Farm, Nature Trail and Community Orchard and as part of this we will be growing fruit and vegetables to feed volunteers and beneficiaries, to sell to the public, incorporate into value-added products and to donate to food banks and those in need.
We are looking for an individual to help to plan and develop our market garden production, including within our 30 ft glasshouse and 36 ft poly tunnel, raised beds and field row cropping systems.
It is our intention to use demonstration gardens to show the public and our beneficiaries different organic and permaculture inspired growing methodologies and systems, including companion planting, intercropping, composting, mulching and even wood chip paths inoculated with edible mushroom species for soil nutrient creation and additional food output.
Tasks might include: scheme planning, occasional zoom calls, site visits & planting experiments, tool & seed sourcing, information dissemination.
Ideally but not necessarily, someone with or happy to self-learn market garden planning.
The applicant will have skills to set up spreadsheets and create garden plans to map which tasks need to take place, where, when, and why, and to record cropping dates.
The applicant will be keen to research sustainable growing methods and research appropriate tools needed.
As a small charity this position will offer the volunteer an opportunity to engage in a growing project at the heart of the Sompting community.
We will support the volunteer in any way which we can. We may provide reading material or training where available.
Sustainable Sussex is currently growing on 2 sites on Sompting Estate in West Sussex. We are on bus routes and a short cycle ride from Lancing Station.
The hours are flexible and site visits and engagement on the ground encouraged as much as possible.
There will be monthly meetings (usually via Zoom at this stage but possibly in person on-site in the future).
