School reading volunteers
Downsbrook Primary School
Do you enjoy reading? Do you live in or around Worthing? Would you like to play your part in helping children catch up on the education they missed during the lockdown? Do you have an hour a week to spare? If so, then Downsbrook primary school would love to hear from you.
Downsbrook Primary School is an inspiring and forward thinking school for 4-11 year olds. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to give every child the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
Reading is such an important part of a young child's education. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 lockdown means that many of our children have had less time in school to develop their reading skills and fluency. We are committed to ensuring that the children meet their potential by providing opportunities for additional, focused reading to make up for lost time. We would really appreciate any support that you can offer us in helping with this.
We are looking for volunteer readers to listen to children read to them. You will be sitting outside a classroom, listening to each child read to you for about 10 minutes. We need volunteers for all age groups and particularly for the younger children. We will give you a short induction, including some simple guidance.
We ask for a minimum commitment of 1 hour a week for 6 weeks. But you can do more for longer if you wish. The time of day is flexible to suit you (within school hours of course).
The safety of volunteers, children and teachers is of the utmost importance to us. We have put in place clear guidelines and procedures to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission while volunteering in school. We will explain this to you in your induction. But please feel free to get in touch now if you would like to know what we are doing to protect your safety before deciding whether to get involved.
You don't need to have done anything like this before or have children yourself.
We are looking for people who enjoy reading and would like to play their part in helping children catch up on the education they've missed due to COVID-19.
Your time can be enough to transform a child’s reading ability, ensuring that they are able to get the most out of their education and enabling them to explore new worlds of knowledge, inspiration, creativity and fun.
This is a a really good opportunity to connect with your local community and meet new people.
We will need to do a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check before you can start volunteering with us. There is no charge to you for doing this but we will need to ask you for some identification documents.
If you already have a DBS, please let us know as this will speed things up.
When do I need to be available?
