Choir with No Name Brighton

We’re looking for sopranos, altos and basses to join our choir as musical volunteers between now and January to support our sound in the approach to Christmas at rehearsals on Mondays 5.30 -8.30 at St Pauls Church, West Street, Brighton, and at our big Xmas Gig on 9th December at the Brighton Dome. After this period, there may be options to join us in a similar long term musical role!

Purpose of the Music Volunteer

  •  Be part of a rostered musical team who give section specific singing support in rehearsals & at gigs
  •  Assisting rehearsals in a musical way on Mondays 5.30 – 8.30. Helping the Choir Director set up, ‘anchoring’ a part, leading warm ups, working with small groups or soloists
  •  Contributing to generating a positive atmosphere that celebrates having fun whilst singing together
  •  Attending & assisting at gigs outside of regular rehearsals:
  •     1. Big gig - 9th Dec 3.30 – 9 - please only apply if you can attend this
  •     2. 11th Dec (time TBC)
  •     3. 18th Dec (11 – 2)

Skills

  • Strong musicality, picking up the music and harmony parts quickly in a rehearsal environment. We expect you to be able to do this by ear, like our members. You are not expected to read music to take part (but if you can, that’s good to know!)
  • Confident singer. Able to sing audibly (and accurately) for our members balancing the confidence and ability of your section: singing loudly when they need you to and to singing less loudly when they’ve got it!
  • Happy to do some small within-section leading during rehearsals and help with warm ups/sectionals (taking your voice part off to teach a harmony line). It is the responsibility of our Choir Director to make sure you feel prepared and able to do this but any prior song leading skills would be a benefit.
  • The ability to get on well with our members, who often have personal difficulties
  • A calm and non-judgemental attitude
  • Good team players
  • Ask for support or guidance when they need it .

Benefits

  • FUN AND GOOD FOR YOU! Singing in a choir is a wonderful and inspiring way to spend an evening, with proven health benefits and a great way to reconnect with people following lock down. We're learning some cheesy Xmas classics, so fun is guaranteed!
  • MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE! Our choir is for people who have experienced homelessness - it is an uplifting, caring community with a family feeling - Joining us as a volunteer will mean you be part of that on the ground. If you are interested in music's role in community cohesion, social change and holistic health, then this is a great opportunity to experience that first hand, and gain real skills for your CV if you are interested in these areas professionally.
  • SING AT THE DOME! Our big Xmas Singalong is now the stuff of Brighton legend. It is the gig of the year (in our honest opinion!) and you will be there with us! What's not to love!

Practical Considerations

We are practicing social distancing and covid safe rehearsals. Plesae bring a mask with you and wear it when moving around the building. We provide a PPE visor for our volunteers.
