Brighton Yoga Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to bringing yoga to those who currently do not have access to yoga but who would gain the most from its benefits. We are currently a small charity but have ambitious plans to become a medium sized charity over the next few years with full-time staff.

We are looking for experienced trustees who can help us make this transition. In particular we are looking for people who may be able to take on the key roles of Treasurer and Secretary, but other roles are also available.

Trustees do not need to be yoga teachers or yoga "experts" though some rudimentary knowledge about yoga and a commitment to well-being is essential. We would also expect a deep commitment to helping others especially those on low incomes and/or who have experienced different forms of trauma and abuse.

It would be helpful if you had prior experience of working as a trustee, especially in a growing charity.

Experience of overseeing the finances of an organisation with an annual turnover of £50,000pa or more would be advantageous if the volunteer wished to take on the Treasurer role.

Experience and knowledge about the governance issues for a charity would be helpful if the volunteer wished to take on the Secretary role.

Experience of and ability to work as part of an active team is essential.

Good inter-personal skills essential.

The volunteer would join an exciting active team at a growing charity which is increasingly attracting interest around the country and internationally for its unique mission to try and turn the yoga community outwards to help those more in need and who would benefit the most from exposure to yoga.

The work is extremely rewarding with glowing testimonies from those for whom we have provided free yoga courses.

Because of the range of work that we do (which also includes running an annual yoga festival attracting 3000 people) the volunteer would learn a lot about the yoga and well-being community and enhance their skills in a range of areas such as event management, marketing, finance and administration.

Practical Considerations

Because of our stage of development, the trustee role at Brighton Yoga Foundation is still a "hands on" one requiring an average commitment of at least half a day's work per week, flexible hours. We hope that may reduce over time as the charity takes on staff allowing the trustees to have more of a strategic role.

Realistically the volunteer would need wither to live in or around Brighton & Hove or spend a significant amount of their time here.

We currently have a shared office in Third Avenue Hove.

We hold trustees meetings approximately 6 times a year and there may be other small group meetings occasionally.

When do I need to be available?

Details As previously stated, hours for the role are flexible. Most of our meetings are currently on a Friday lunchtime but this could change if necessary. And most of the work can be done from home. We also pay trustee expenses for travel, childcare etc
