Trustee - with financial acumen (not a Treasurer role)
Money Advice Plus
Do you have financial acumen? Looking for a trustee role? Want to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable people in Brighton & Hove? Able to commit 8-10 hours a month? If so, read on...
Money Advice Plus is a registered charity with headquarters in Hove, helping and supporting people experiencing difficulty managing their money or financial affairs. Alongside our face-to-face work with clients in Sussex, we run a national telephone advice service, from our office in Eastbourne. We have 25 FTE staff and over £1m turnover.
Our mission is to help people manage their money effectively. We do this by providing free innovative money handling and advice services, working in partnership with other agencies. Our independent, confidential and flexible approach is tailored to individuals’ needs, allowing us to reach those who find it most difficult to access advice.
We specialise in working with clients who find it difficult to access mainstream advice services, by offering home visits and incredibly personalised support - to an extent not offered by other organisations.
This includes working with people experiencing severe mental illness, dementia, fluctuating mental capacity, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory loss, substance misuse, and with refugees and asylum seekers.
Our services help clients to deal with current debt problems, manage essential bill payments, understand their rights, understand about legal action taken by creditors, offer repayment by contacting creditors on their behalf, receive advice about state benefits and tax credits and make cost savings and maximise income.
Money handling is also offered for the most vulnerable, in the form of cash delivery, bill paying, budget administration, and the charity can deputise for people unable to manage their finances themselves.
We are the only UK charity to provide national service for domestic and economic abuse victim-survivors – The Financial Support Line for Victims of Domestic Abuse.
We are also effective in providing information and advice to national and local politicians about the real-life experiences that our client’s face. For example, we meet regularly with local MPs, and sometimes with government ministers.
Our Board of eight hard working Trustees are looking to bring into their team a new Trustee with Finance experience who can support the financial management of Money Advice Plus and bring a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to all aspects of our work. This is not a Treasurer role - we already have someone in that post. Your expertise will help strengthen the Board's finance capabilities.
Like all charities, MAP faces huge challenges driven by the pandemic, and by changes in policy and funding for this sector. MAP has an outstanding staff team, and all Board members have a crucial role in ensuring that they have the support and representation that they deserve.
Your responsibilities as a trustee will be to:
- Prepare for, and attend our board meetings. These are held 6 times a year and run for 2 hours.
- Prepare for an attend our finance sub-committee. Held 5-6 times a year.
- Contribute your skills, experience, and knowledge to the board's discussions.
- Take a particular interest in one or more of our areas of work
- Be visible to our staff - occasionally visiting our offices and attending a staff meeting.
- Being a sounding board for senior staff around your area of expertise.
- Be an Ambassador for Money Advice Plus - telling other people and organisations about us.
Being a trustee is a long term commitment. We are looking for people able to join us for at least 3 years.

We are looking for someone with financial acumen which you may have gained in a finance department, running your own business or in a general management role. You don't need to be an accountant and you don't need to have trustee experience.
You should be able to offer:
- Financial acumen. The ability to read management and annual accounts, to contribute to budget discussions and to understand our complex income profile.
- Strategic and creative thinking.
- Good judgement.
- An ability to work as part of a team, while being confident to speak your mind.
- An interest in the work we do.
We are a strong established board, with a strong staff team. So this is an excellent development opportunity for younger people looking to gain experience at board level and expand their networks. We are always interested in diversifying our board, so whatever your background, if you can offer financial acumen we would welcome a conversation with you.
It is a great opportunity to gain experience of strategy and governance, and to make a significant difference to our community.
We are currently meeting remotely. Once Covid restrictions are lifted, we are likely to resume meeting at our offices in Hove.
When do I need to be available?
|Details||The time commitment is between 8-10 hours a month, including the meetings.|
