Remote volunteering opportunity. Are you a qualified bookkeeper?

Yoga for ME offers weekly gentle supportive yoga classes for people with ME, fibromyalgia, long Covid and other health issues. We are looking for a volunteer to help us with bookkeeping and applying for grants. The Group holds 2 sessions a week, Monday afternoon at the Cornerstone Community Centre and a virtual class Thursday afternoon. Ideally, the volunteer will be able to attend and participate in the weekly Thursday afternoon online yoga session, as part of your engagement with the group.

In Autumn 2022, we aim to set up a committee with a constitution and bank account for this long running community group. The Volunteer Bookkeeper would be one of three trustees for the group acting as treasurer.

What will I be doing?

  • Recording attendance at classes and maintaining spreadsheets for both classes.
  • Liaising with the yoga teacher.
  • Liaising with the Monday volunteer regarding class attendance and payment of teacher.
  • Recording the teacher's pay and other outgoings.
  • Managing the income and expenditure.
  • Writing 2 grant reports in Autumn 2022, and the termly and annual financial summaries.
  • Setting up a charitable bank account and helping in setting up the new committee and constitution.
  • Meeting termly with fellow trustees - this may be online or face-to-face as agreed.
  • Initially liaising with Cornerstone Community Centre, as our grant money is currently banked with the Centre. They will assist with transferring funds from the grant monthly to pay the venue and Zoom costs, and cover any shortfall in the teacher's pay required until the bank account is set up, and the grant money transferred, Once the bank account is set up, you will be responsible for the payment of invoices.
  • Completing grant application forms using previous applications as a template.

  • Experience of bookkeeping.
  • Computer literacy. Experience of recording accounts in Excel and managing an Outlook mailbox.
  • Experience of using Zoom.
  • Experience of report writing.
  • An understanding of how charities / committees are set up and governed.
  • Able to set up a charity bank account.
  • An understanding of fund accounting and able to produce reports detailing expenditure and revenue.
  • Good communications skills. Ability to liaise effectively with Cornerstone Community Centre, the Sussex ME Society, Yoga teacher, and the membership.
  • Some understanding of the illness ME/CFS and its social effects on those with this condition.
  • Some experience of yoga is desirable, but not necessary,

  • Supporting the organisation in bringing health benefits, comfort and well-being to people in chronic pain and social isolation.
  • An opportunity to participate in the weekly yoga classes, which can bring improvements to physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being.
  • An opportunity to gain experience in the charitable field.

Practical Considerations

  • Volunteer will need access to a computer and telephone for communications.
  • Able to attend the Thursday afternoon Zoom class - but this is not an absolute requirement.
  • Contact with other members of the team occasionally takes place at the Cornerstone Community Centre on a Monday afternoon.
  • The Community Centre is easily accessible by bus. Parking in the roads is metered.
  • Support will be given by the retiring administrator.

When do I need to be available?

Details The hours per week are variable. Thursday Zoom class is at 2.30pm. Writing reports and grant applications may take up to 16 hours in total over November and December.
