Do you love to cook? Are you happy to cook an extra portion for a lonely neighbour at least once a fortnight?  Do you enjoy chatting to people?  Do you want to play an active role in your local community? If so, then this role is right up your street!

Cook & Share is a project offering food and friendship to people who are feeling isolated, vulnerable, or struggling to make ends meet during the COVID-19 lockdown. It is a partnership between We are Food Pioneers and Time to Talk Befriending.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare and cook an additional portion to their own evening meal and deliver it to someone they have been matched with in their neighbourhood.

The aim is to match you with someone local who you may have a common interest with. Your role is to provide a home cooked meal and be a friendly face for a lonely neighbour. It may start with a doorstep drop but the dream is that over time you would stop for a chat, and be a bridge to the local community.

We ask you to commit to at least one regular day a fortnight - a day which suits you and the person you have been matched with. And to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months.

You don't need to have done anything like this before. We are just looking for people who enjoy cooking at home and chatting to people.

  • Know you're making a difference to a lonely, isolated neighbour.
  • Meet new people.
  • Contribute to helping our community during this difficult time.

Practical Considerations

You will be fully supported so you feel comfortable and confident in your volunteering.

You will receive guidelines on food hygiene

You will be matched via the Time to Talk befriending matching process. Time to Talk Befriending are partnering with us is for a 6 month pilot period and you will have induction and support from both Time to Talk and FoodPioneers

You will be supported by the FoodPioneers Volunteer Coordinator who will contact you once a month for a check in.

When do I need to be available?

Details We ask you to commit to cooking a meal on a regular day, at least once a fortnight. Consistency is really important. And we also ask that you are willing to volunteer for at least 6 months. When you deliver the meal, we suggest you stop for a chat on the doorstep - for up to 30 mins. And if you're delivering a meal fortnightly, we ask that you phone the person in the week between deliveries for a 20 min chat to see how they are doing.
