Our counsellors offer face-to-face, pre-bereavement and bereavement counselling to patients, family and significant friends at our hospice in Hove or in a client’s home. For qualified counsellors, you will need a minimum of a diploma (Level 5/6) and to be a member of a recognised professional body; for trainee counsellors, you will need to be in your second year of your diploma training (Level 5).


  • For qualified counsellors, you will need to have a diploma as a minimum requirement plus membership to a recognised professional body. For trainees, you MUST be at least in your second year of diploma training (Level 5).
  • To have awareness of the impact of palliative care and treatment, end of life, death and bereavement and how this can change a person’s life and situation.
  • To recognise one’s own personal boundaries and limitations within the role of being a Volunteer Counsellor and liaise with members of the Counselling and Bereavement team as appropriate.
  • To have a non-judgemental, accepting and emotionally mature approach to working with clients.

Practical Considerations

  • This role requires a DBS check 
  • You will need to attend a Welcome day and complete Martlets training in:
  1.  Information governance and IT awareness
  2.  General Induction into organisation and the counselling service 
  3.  Martlets volunteer counsellors training.
  • Access to transport and a secure private telephone.

When do I need to be available?

Details Successful volunteers will need to complete the eight-week Martlets Counselling and Bereavement Service Training (24 hours in total) This will be delivered on Wednesday evenings 17.45 – 21.00pm from 26/1/22 – 23/3/22 (excepting half-term on 16/2/22). On completion of training, volunteers should be able to commit: • A three-hour session a week (two 50-minute client sessions plus an hour of admin). • Fortnightly supervision session of two hours
