St Luke’s Advice Service SLAS is a registered charity (no. 1094894) providing debt and benefit advice to people in need across Brighton and Hove. We are a free and confidential service, helping those who need us, for as long as they need us. We are a small friendly team working out of our office on Exeter Street near Seven Dials. We hold the AQS quality standard mark and are well known and respected within the city. The Christian ethos is core to the work of SLAS and this translates in dealing with problems holistically and looking at the whole person. We are committed to helping anyone who comes to our service, irrespective of gender, race, sexuality, age, disability or religious beliefs.
We are seeking an experienced individual with a background in money advice (financial advice/insolvency practitioner) who would like to join our money advice team in a volunteer capacity, assisting our clients in managing their money and budgeting, focusing on the right solutions for them. Our clients come to us from a range of backgrounds. Many of them have complex needs and mental health issues so an adaptable communication style is essential. We will support you through on the job training, alongside a fully comprehensive package including exams, leading to a recognised accredited money adviser qualification. Because of this, we are looking for someone who can give a minimum of a day a week, either as a whole or two half days for not less than a year.
Meeting with clients and building relationships to take detailed financial information, such as income and expenditure and using this to help the client to set a realistic budget
Working with our in house benefits advice team to check that individuals are claiming everything they are entitled to
Writing to creditors and agreeing a suitable solution such as repayment plans for debt, Debt Relief Orders or Bankruptcy Orders and navigating the process with the client
Managing and maintaining accurate client files, logging relevant information on our computer systems
You must be
Able to commit to a day a week as a minimum for at least one year
Confident at meeting new people
Able to build rapport and extract relevant information quickly and accurately, gaining a client’s trust is a key component of this role
Experienced in the provision of money advice
Empathetic and understanding of individual circumstances
Organised and able to manage your own case load

We are based in a residential property with toilets on the first floor and no lift access. The no. 27 bus passes nearby.
